Enjoy the Delectable Lemon

I love lemons and lemon juice, and in this article you will learn just a fraction of the many simple, edible uses (as opposed to complex recipes and household uses) for the lemon.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lemons
  • Lemon juice
  1. Step 1

Make lemon the center of attention. The simplest thing to do with a lemon is to eat it. Some people think it's weird and may call you a sourpuss. Tell them you're so sweet that you need to balance it out with some tart.

Cut the lemon in quarters (as with oranges) and eat as if the lemon wedges are mouthpieces.

For lemonade, please see "Resources" below.

  2. Step 2

Squirt lemon juice in tea. Other beverages that go great with lemon is cola, Sprite or 7-Up--almost any soft drink will do. Lemon adds to many hard drinks too. A squirt of lemon gives the beverage a nice tangy kick, or you can add to juices such as cranberry, grape, apricot or even V-8.

  3. Step 3

Squirt emon Juice on foods. Fish is the most obvious candidate, but there are many others. Try pasta, broccoli, jello, carrots, tomatoes, cukes, asparagus, salads, greens, yams, chicken, or other fruits such as melons. Try zesting up your grilled foods, too.

I bet gazpacho would also be good with a squirt of lemon, though some recipes call for lemon anyway. (If you've never tried gazpacho because it's a cold soup, give it a shot during the summer, it's refreshing) Please see "Resources" below for gazpacho recipe.

  4. Step 4

Garnish dishes with lemon. This is a very safe way to experiment with the lemon, since it's mostly being used for its brilliant color. You'll actually allowing the diner to do most of the experimenting and they can choose to squeeze or not to squeeze.

Chicken and fish dishes of course come to mind, but nothing says you can't garnish pasta, Chinese food, or Mexican food with the lemon. Serve beer with lemon wedge on the glass or inside the bottle neck.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sprinkle sugar or salt on lemon wedges.
  • Use in concert with salad dressings or olive oil.
  • Experiment with lemon juice as a substitute for vinegar you're known to have intuitive culinary sense.
  • If you're adding lemon to something that's already tart or neutral, you may want to add something sweet, too.
