Step 1
Discuss the bed purchase with your tween. You may be surprised to find out that they have strong opinions of what they are looking for in a new bed. While I would not recommend purchasing the exact bed they ask for, I would suggest trying to find something reminiscent of the style they are seeking. If you fear that getting your tween's input will only set you up for a huge disagreement, have them look at a few pictures of beds and rank them in order of what they like.

Step 2
Spend some time deciding on the size of your tween's new bed. If they are too tall for their previous bed, you know you will need an extra long bed. If they feel cramped in a twin-size bed, you know they will at least need a full size.

Step 3
Keep an eye on comfort. Comfort is just as important for a tween as it is for an adult. Having an uncomfortable bed during this time of rapid growth can set them up for a lifetime of back pains. Do not use your own comfort meter to determine what will be best for your child. Bring the tween with you when it is time to buy a mattress.

Step 4
Do not pay more than you have to. One you know the style, size, and mattress features you plan to purchase for your tween, it is time to bargain shop. Spend some time looking through sales flyers to find out who has the best prices. Many store that sell beds with match or beat the price that others stores are selling the same item at. Do your research well though, because they change the model numbers and names from store to store to make comparing like items difficult.
