Do you have a teen that is quickly becoming tech-savvy and wants a room to fit his personality? While this might seem like a difficult task, it does not have to be if you follow these simple instructions.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Black and grey paint (2 shades of grey)
  • Industrial Metal shelving/desk system
  • Silver spray paint
  • Posters
  • stencils

Step1
Remove all wood furniture from the room. You can use if for another child, or store it until someone wants to use it again. You can also choose to paint the wood furniture black and keep it in the room. Trade out the knobs for simple metallic handles and pulls.
Step2
Paint the walls of the room a medium-light grey color. You can paint the ceiling a shade darker, a shade lighter, or leave it white.
Step3
Image by dermiller stock.xchng (Royalty free) Design the accent wall of the room in a binary code design. Pencil light parallel lines on the accent wall, the size of the stencils. Using large stencils of just the numbers 1 and 0 paint the numbers in straight lines over and over on the entire wall in any random order. You also have the option of having the binary code mean something. You can have your child do some research and decide what the wall should say. They he can provide the order in which the 1’s and 0’s should be painted.
Step4
Assemble the metal shelving system in the room. It should have enough desk space for your child’s computer equipment, plus room to grow. If your son is like mine, he will want multiple monitors and printing equipment.
Step5
Spraypaint old bedroom accessories in silver to give them a metallic look (the ones that will accept the paint without it flaking off later). Items like cork boards, garbage pails, storage baskets and boxes, and pencil holders can be painted. You can even create new bedroom accessories by spray painting salvaged boxes and containers.
Step6
Finish off the room with posters with metallic frames. Look for vintage compute posters with pictures of computers from the 1970s and 1980s. You can find these online.
Step7
Bonus project. Purchase or find a large quantity of mouse pads. You can glue them to a board to make a corkboard, cover a desktop with them, or cushion a bench or stool.
