How to Make Gullah/Geechee Sweet Tea

Descendants of the slaves that worked in South Carolina's rice plantations, the Gullah people are a distinctive group of African Americans that live in the Coastal regions of South Carolina and Georgia. They speak an English based Creole language that retains many elements of African language and culture. At least 100,000 people continue to speak Gullah today. Learn how to make a refreshing Gullah/Geechee drink that's sure to please.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 Gallon Jar with lid
  • 1 Cup of Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup of Honey
  • 1 Sliced Lemon
  • 1 Sliced Orange
  • 3-4 Large Tea Bags
  1. Step 1

    Pour cup of sugar into jar. Add 1/4 cup of honey (Regular or flavored).

  2. Step 2

    Add sliced lemon and orange. Fill with water. Put lid on jar, close tightly. Shake well.

  3. Step 3

    Remove lid. Place tea bags in water with tags hanging over the sides. Put lid on jar, close tightly.

  4. Step 4

    Place jar outside in sunlight. Let sit for 8 hours. Remove tea bags, serve with or without ice.
