Change a Headlight Lightbulb

These are the generalized directions for changing the headlight light bulb for most cars. All models are not the same, so there may be a few differences based on your individual car.

From Quick Guide: All About Headlights
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flashlight Screwdriver New bulb
  1. Step 1

Prop open the hood of your car and put a spot light or flash light onto the back of the headlight. Look to the far corner of the hood, the headlight is housed in a cubby to the far sides.

  2. Step 2

Some models have a back cover which will require a screwdriver to unscrew the backplate to get to the bulb. Locate the screws and unscrew using the screwdriver.

  3. Step 3

Remove backplate. Some models will also have a wiring component connected usually by plastic clips, detach plastic clips and pull wiring to the side.

  4. Step 4

Old Light bulb should now be visible. Remove old light bulb by screwing it to the left.

  5. Step 5

Go to local auto store and purchase new light bulb that matches the one for your model car (most places have a book that it can be looked up in)

  6. Step 6

Insert new light bulb by screwing to the right, secure in place.

  7. Step 7

Test that it is in properly and working by turning on headlights and make sure it lights up.

  8. Step 8

Plug wiring component back in, put backplate back on, insert screws back in and screw in with screw driver.

  9. Step 9

    Close hood.
