Traveling to Europe is an amazing adventure, if not a cheap one. Tickets to Europe will likely be very expensive, so to save money on intra-continental travel, one must have knowledge of the travel options within the continent.
The long supposed best option for cheap travel was the European rail system, trams, or other such means of train transportation. While this is certainly a viable option for many people, it is certainly not the best one if you’re looking to save money.
Step2
Air travel, for better or worse, is usually the best way to get about in Europe. European airlines are subsidized by the EU to encourage their citizens to travel about. This can easily be the savvy traveler’s means to travel as well, it just takes a little, old-fashioned know-how.
There are many websites available for this endeavor, depending on where you’re traveling any search engine should be able to get you to an appropriate vendor. Airplanes are not only cheaper and much faster, but they also are non-smoking, whereas many train cars within Europe are still very much in favor of smoking.
Trains also charge additional fees on top of whatever you pay to “reserve” your seats, these Reservations can be an additional 3 to 10 Euros per destination, which can really add up if you’re taking a tour of several different cities.
Step3
Discount fares on train passes can also be cancelled without any advance warning or compensation, this author himself was deboarded and faced a 6 hour delay when a train bound for Rotterdam was cancelled without warning. These airlines are best suited for trips in or very near the European Union. Flights to other continents will not be appreciably cheaper. If you are travelling within a contiguous continent, flight is usually the cheapest and quickest option, not to mention, the friendliest on the lungs.
