How to Tote Your Surfboard

The correct way to strap your surfboard to the top of your car and how to carry it to the beach.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • $40
  • Surfboard
Step1
Consider the various padded car racks that strap your board on top of your car if you don't have enough cash to buy a car rack and you don't own a VW bus or a truck,
Step2
Shop online or at your local surf shop. Padded racks cost about $40 and come with two sets of straps--one set fastens the rack to the car, the other straps the board to the rack.
Step3
Place the pads on top of the car.
Step4
Open the driver's side and passenger side windows. Run the straps through the windows and tighten the strap. This fastens the pads to your car.
Step5
Gently lay your board, fins facing up, on top of the pads. Fins can be at the back or the front of the car.
Step6
Take the other set of straps and tighten--but don't crush your board--them around the surfboard. Now you're ready to head to the beach.
Step7
Un-strap your board and leave the carrier on top of your car or put it inside your car. You'll have to strap it to the car again later.
Step8
Carry your board to the beach under your arm with the fins in the back facing toward you or carry it over your head.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't drive as fast as usual.
  • FCS makes a good softrack.
  • A flying surfboard could kill someone, so make sure it's fastened.
