How to Take the Ferry in Shanghai

Getting across the river in Shanghai relies on one of three methods of mass transit: the subway, the bridges via taxi, or the ferry. If you're on foot near the river, the bridges aren't going to be very convenient. The subway can be, but on the Pudong (modern) side of the river, the metro station is a bit of a walk from the actual river. So, your best way across is the ferry, and this is how you do that.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Local currency

Step1
Find the ferry you want. They all start from the same location, but they then cross the river to different points, depending on which side of the river you're on. If you're crossing from Shanghai's historic section (the Bund) over to the new section (Pudong) you'll have less concern with this.
Step2
Get your tickets for the ferry. As at all public transit stations in Shanghai, you can purchase them from either a vending window or a machine. Most of the signs will have English as well as Chinese, so you don't need to worry about knowing the language.
Step3
Unlike the metro, the buses, or the elevators in Shanghai, getting on and off the ferry is controlled. You won't be allowed on until everyone else is off, so be patient.
Step4
If you're on a ferry that's enclosed, find a seat near the window. If not, find a space near the rail. You'll get a better view of the city, and avoid a bit more of the second-hand smoke (a common annoyance in Shanghai).
Step5
Get off the ferry. Unlike taking other forms of mass transit in Shanghai (the metro, for example), you won't need to swipe your ticket again when you get off. If you're on the ferry with lots of people on bicycles, you might want to let them get off first.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a bicycle, the ferry is the only way to get across the river. Same if you're riding a moped/motor scooter.
  • Don't lose track of your belongings. If you forget your bag, it's very unlikely it will be there when you go back for it.
  • If you're wearing a backpack, don't leave it on your back. Bring it around front or carry it in your hand.
  • Keep your eye, and a hand, on you bag, purse, briefcase, etc. at all times, especially in the crowds getting on and off.
