1. Call before 9 p.m. The girl you call may be getting ready for bed at that hour. Calling early helps ensure you catch her when she has enough free time to engage in a phone conversation.

2. Ask the girl about the highlights of her day. This conversation-starting question will both help you learn more about the girl and uncover fodder to further your conversation.

3. Ask follow-up questions, but no more than one per minute. Too many follow-up questions will make the girl feel as if you are interviewing her instead of having a conversation. To fill the time, offer relevant thoughts and information about yourself.

4. Ask the girl about the news of the day or another question that doesn't involve either of you personally. These questions help you discover more about the girl and spice up the conversation.

5. Smile when you speak to help you achieve an upbeat tone. People like to surround themselves with others who are cheerful.

Tips & Warnings

• Give your full attention to the girl while on the phone with her. Don't work on other activities, such as checking your email or watching television.

• Limit your conversation to about 15 minutes. Keeping the conversation short will keep her wanting more.
