Nothing says fall like a freshly carved pumpkin. But don't let that be the only way you decorate these autumn vegetables. With a little creativity, you can make them look very distinctive (and have fun doing it.)

From Quick Guide: Pumpkin Carving 101
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pumpkins
  • Glitter
  • Craft Glue
  • Craft Picture
  • Old Pictures
  • Carving Knife
  • Teacup Hooks
  • Markers
  1. Step 1

Glitter them. Dip a craft sponge in glue and coat entire pumpkin. Pour glitter over edges of pumpkin and let dry. Try out vibrant fall colors to make brown, gold, and red pumpkins sure to dazzle your autumn table. (This technique works best on smaller or Jack-be-Little pumpkins.)

  2. Step 2

Decoupage them. Use color copies of favorite cards or family photographs to jazz up your average pumpkin. Choose a medium to large sized pumpkin, cover in craft glue, and place images over top. Smooth out to avoid air bubbles. Press images into the natural ridges of the pumpkin. Cover all with another layer of craft glue, and let dry. Your pumpkin will have a creative, artsy look.

  3. Step 3

Drill small holes in pumpkins and stick Mr. Potato Head parts in them. (Use smaller to medium size pumpkins for best result.)

  4. Step 4

    Carve them, of course.

  5. Step 5

Crochet or knit a hat for your pumpkins. Better yet, use that old hat of your husband's!

  6. Step 6

Create caricature portraits. Use magic marker to duplicate the "face" of each family member. For added fun, have each family member create a pumpkin "face" of one of the other family members. Place "family" of pumpkins outside on the porch, or on the kitchen counter for daily viewing.

  7. Step 7

Stick teacup hooks in large pumpkins and make key holders out of them. Put pumpkin on the kitchen counter or in the mudroom.

  8. Step 8

Let your love of words spill over onto your pumpkins. Literally. Use craft paints to write favorite phrases or famous quotes on them. Better yet, write the things your family says all the time as a fun way to personalize them. After all, how many people have pumpkins that say, "wipe your feet" or "dinner's ready!" on them?
