How to Perform the Perfect Swim Move

You've been getting pounded all day by the offensive lineman in front of you. He's been aggressive and strong, but you've noticed he's a little slow to react. At that moment, something clicked. You've figured out a way to get around him - a swim move.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • cleats
  • practice defenders
  • open area
Step1
As a down defensive lineman, you're already in your 4-point stance when the offense breaks the huddle.
Step2
Survey the offensive scheme. Determine whether or not a swim move is warranted. It's 3rd down and 14 - an almost guaranteed passing down. You decide yes.
Step3
Keep your eye on the ball. An encroachment penalty would be costly. Decide which side of the lineman you plan on performing your swim move.
Step4
When the ball is snapped, take the hand to the side you want to go, and use a boxing-style hook shot. Go around and shove your arm through the outside of the offensive lineman's shoulderpad. That should lift the lineman up slightly in that direction.
Step5
Use your other arm in a swimming motion over the lifted shoulder of the lineman, as if you were doing a crawl stroke over his head.
Step6
Run through the lineman's block. If timed correctly, he will never know what hit him.
Step7
Sack the quarterback.
Step8
Celebrate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Alternate your swim moves to keep the linemen off balance. If they can't anticipate which side you're swimming, then they can't block you very easily.
  • DO NOT overuse the swim move. If you do, you'll hit a double team every time. A helmet to the ribs doesn't feel good. Trust me.
