Candied walnuts have a sweet flavor and crunchy texture and are a perfect accompaniment to baked brie or a pear/gorgonzola salad.

Things You'll Need:

  • ½ cup toasted walnut pieces
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Heavy bottomed saucepan
  • Fork
  • Parchment paper

    How to Make Candied Walnuts

  1. Step 1

    Mix the sugar and salt and place in the saucepan.

  2. Step 2

    Heat over medium-low heat. Do not disturb until the sugar begins to melt.

  3. Step 3

    Stir with the fork and let the sugar caramelize slightly (1 to 2 minutes).

  4. Step 4

    Working quickly, add the walnut pieces to the pan and mix with the fork. Immediately transfer the nuts to the parchment paper. Allow to cool.

  5. Step 5

    Break apart the nuts if they have stuck together.

Tips & Warnings
  • To clean the pan, soak it in scalding hot water before the sugar completely hardens.
  • Do not leave sugar unattended while it is melting.
  • Once the sugar has melted, work as quickly as possible. If left on the flame too long, the sugar will burn. After you remove it from the heat, it will rapidly harden.

on 1/4/2008 I have found that soaking the pan in scalding hot water immediately after removing the walnuts makes it easier to clean. But it can get messy if you let it sit.
