Ultrasounds aren't painful, but are probably the most enjoyable medical test you can undergo.

Preparing for your ultrasound, which will result in a sonogram image, is exciting. Finally getting a peek at your new baby can make the pregnancy seem all the more real. But it's also an important diagnostic procedure, checking the growth and progress of your growing fetus. While preparing for the test isn't difficult, making sure you are fully prepared can help you feel more comfortable for the procedure.

Instructions

Understand the type of ultrasound you will need. If you are later in your pregnancy, you will likely have an abdominal ultrasound where the transducer, which looks a bit like a thick wand, will be rubbed gently on the belly. If it is very early in your pregnancy, you will likely have a transvaginal, or pelvic, ultrasound where the transducer is inserted into the vagina.

Know where you are going. Your ultrasound may not be in the same building as your doctor, so double check the address and leave with plenty of time to get there. If you arrive for your appointment too late, you may have to reschedule for another day.

Drink 32 ounces of fluids an hour before your appointment if you are having an abdominal ultrasound. A full bladder helps position your pelvic organs more appropriately. If you are having a transvaginal ultrasound, you will need to relieve yourself before the exam; an empty bladder is best.

Most ultrasounds machines can record the images and video of the baby in utero, so bring a recordable CD in case recording the images is an option.

    • 5

Wear loose clothing. For an abdominal ultrasound, you will need to slide your pants slightly below your hips to fully expose your belly. Make sure you feel comfortable with your pants at that position, since an ultrasound can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. If you are having a transvaginal ultrasound, you will need to remove your pants and undergarments completely, and will be covered with a hospital gown or something similar during the exam.

Ask the technologist when the results will be forwarded to your doctor. If there is suspected problem, you will want to know when to expect your doctor to call. Until then, try not to worry too much and enjoy seeing the first images of your baby.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you drink so much fluid that you are in pain, you may eliminate some, but just enough to be comfortable.

  • Don't forget to bring someone with you to share your joy.

  • Most technicians will print out photos of your baby; don't forget to take your copy of the pictures.
