The giant stride method of entry is one of the easiest methods of getting off the scuba diving boat. This entry works equally well from the dive boat or off the dock. Using the giant stride keeps you near the surface and gives you and your buddy time to get together before descending on your dive.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Your scuba gear

One Giant Step for Scuba Divers . . .

Step1
Have all your scuba gear on once you reach the rear of the dive boat. Your mask, fins and regulator should all be in place.
Step2
Step to the edge of the platform. Place the balls of your feet at the edge of the platform. The tips of your fins should be hanging over the edge of the platform. Check the water below to make sure there are no divers in the way.
Step3
Hold your mask and regulator in place with your right hand and any loose items in your left hand. You should be pushing the top of your mask against your face while looking at the horizon. This method helps ensure that your mask stays on securely.
Step4
Step off from the platform with a giant stride forward using either your left or your right leg. Once you are in the water, bring your legs together to help yourself ascend back to the surface. Check to make sure your gear is in place.
Step5
Let the divemaster know that you are okay. Turn back to the boat and give the okay signal. Never give the okay signal unless you are really okay.
Step6
Make sure you are out of the way of the platform and other divers trying to enter the water. Now is a good time to make any gear adjustments if needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only use the giant stride entry when the water is deeper than six feet.
  • Make sure there are no divers or other objects underneath the water that you may hit while entering.
  • Scuba diving can be a dangerous sport. Use common sense and avoid unnecessary risk.
