When my son started crying and I couldn't find anything wrong I consulted my family doctor and heard the dreaded word "COLIC" for the first time. I was told that colic is actually gas bubbles trapped in the lower intestines. I was told that since there was no actual cure for it the only thing to do was try to make my baby as comfortable as possible while the gas worked itself out. Now, anyone who has had to endure a child screaming at the top of their lungs all night and sometimes all day knows that it is impossible to made the baby even remotely comfortable. The reality was setting in that the only reprieve would be exhaustion. My doctor suggested walking him and rubbing his back. When I asked the doctor how long this would go on I was told that some children can be "colicky" for as long as 2 or 3 years!
