Things You'll Need:
- Full length mirror
- A realty check
- Wardrobe overhaul
-
Step 1
Women are aging with tremendous grace and sex appeal. Advances in health care and skin care, along with diet and exercise options, have been very advantageous to the aging gracefully process. But even if you've taken excellent care of yourself and have maintained a trim body and healthy skin, style has to change to compliment your age. Staying in the same style you wore twenty years ago may feel like a personal victory of sorts, but the truth is we are changing and growing. Our sense of style should reflect an appreciation of those changes. Otherwise, we are stuck in who we use to be, not who we've become.
-
Step 2
Take a long, realistic look at your wardrobe. If you have items that date back a decade ago, a child ago, or ten pounds ago, it's time for an overhaul. Get out the charity bags and start cleaning out anything out-dated, no longer your size, or borrowed from your daughter before she moved out and started her own family. Try to view the change as cleansing and empowering. You aren't growing old, you're growing up! You've grown into a mature, vibrant woman and there is nothing sexier than a woman comfortable with where she is in life.
-
Step 3
When you go shopping for new clothes, take an hour or so and just do some people watching. It's a pretty safe bet you'll see older women strolling along in their torn, skin tight jeans or pink baby doll t-shirts. If you're watching with intent, you'll realize this isn't the most flattering look for these ladies. Also notice the older ladies who are dressed with confidence and purpose. Their sensuality and sense of personal empowerment is hard to miss. Take note of the no-no's you want to avoid and of the good styles you'll want to look for as you shop for yourself.
-
Step 4
Just because you should probably leave halter tops and baby doll tees to the high schools girls doesn't mean you have to avoid color and style. Prints that are too busy can be overpowering, but nicely blended solid colors can strike a nice mix of femininity and professionalism. Avoid the Jr. Miss department styles in favor of fashions that reveal more about you as a person than you as a body.
-
Step 5
Size your clothes properly. Even if you are still a sleek size 6, pouring yourself into a size 4 just screams of someone desperately clinging to the past. You don't have to trade in your leather pants for a tartan jumper, but you should let your wardrobe grow up along with you.
-
Step 6
If your hairstyle is the same as it was 10 years ago or if it's the same as one of your daughters (or, God forbid, granddaughter) you're long overdue for a makeover. Find a nice, reputable salon that can give you color and style ideas that update your personality. The same should be done for your make-up. Blue eyeshadow with thick black eye liner was great, wasn't it? That's the past; time to brighten your style and accentuate your sexy features with adult make-up!
-
Step 7
Don't forget shoes when you're cleaning out that closet. There's a whole world of amazing shoes available for women today. There will be little excuse for you walking around in the same old mules and flip-flops.
-
Step 8
Embrace your beauty and it will serve you well. Change is inevitable and we can either change gracefully or go into it kicking and screaming. The most important part of becoming a beautiful older woman is attitude. You have to learn to love this fabulous woman you've become before the rest of the world can possibly appreciate how great she truly is! Besides, your daughter will probably appreciate having her clothes back.

on 11/22/2007 I have five daughters and I have never had a problem with wanting to wear any of their clothes. Of course being their father might be why.
