Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Measure your horse's back to determine what size saddle would best fit his back. Using a thin wire, such as a wire coat hanger, shape it to fit across his back over the withers. Then use the wire as a stencil on some cardboard. Trace the shape onto the cardboard and cut off the top side. The bottom can be brought along to saddle shops and put under the saddle to get a good idea of how it will fit your horse.
Step2
Find saddles that are made specifically for barrel racing. Barrel saddles are made to hold you in better during a barrel race. Most have higher backs and horns.
Step3
Look for the weight of the saddle. Every second counts in barrel racing and less weight means a faster time.
Step4
Sit in the saddle to determine how it fits you. Barrel saddles can be a little smaller than regular saddles so you don't have too much room to move around while running and turning.
