Exercising a barrel racing horse is different from exercising a horse used for trail rides. Barrel racing horses are athletes and need specific training to perform to the best of their abilities. Learn how to keep your barrel racing horse in shape throughout the rodeo season.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Walk your horse after getting on to warm his muscles before more strenuous exercise. Walk for about 10 minutes.

  2. Step 2

Trot your horse for at least 30 minutes, with a break if neccessary. Go back and forth from long trotting to regular trotting. Trotting up and down a slight incline can help build muscle and stamina also.

  3. Step 3

Lope your horse after trotting. Loping can lead to a fast gallop, but not every time you exercise the horse. Loping helps build lung capacity.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make up a schedule and stick to it. Your barrel racing horse should be exercised at least 4-5 times a week.
