Comfrey is a medicinal herb, but is also grown for its beauty. It has bell shaped flowers that can be white, blue or purple. This plant propagates easily by root division.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pieces of root from another comfrey plant, or comfrey seeds
  • Corner of your garden to grow comfrey by itself
  • Good soil and ample water

Step1
Take a one inch piece of root (this type of propagation is better than starting from seed) and plant it in three inches of soil. If you decide to grow comfrey from seed, follow package instructions.
Step2
Grow in full sun or partial shade with good, well-drained soil.
Step3
Give plenty of water.
Step4
Gather roots from this new plant in fall after the first frost or in spring, before the first leaves appear in order to propagate more comfrey plants.

Tips & Warnings

  • Comfrey grows to five feet tall and three feet wide.
  • Old comfrey leaves are great material to add to your compost pile.
  • Comfrey paste hardens like plaster; that is how it got the name “boneset.”
  • This is a great perennial to try in your wild garden.
  • Comfrey is a strong medicinal herb; do not take internally.
  • Roots are invasive and plant spreads vigorously.
