How to have a Gullah/Geechee Oyster Roast

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 Bushel - Bushel of Oysters
  • Work Gloves
  • Oyster Knife/Shucker
  • Large Roaster w/Cover
  • Newspapers
  1. Step 1

    Turn oven on to highest setting. Cover bottom of roaster with water; no more than a cup.

  2. Step 2

    Add oysters, a couple of layers deep. Cover roaster then put in the oven.

  3. Step 3

    "Roast" for 6-8 minutes (less time if you like them really juicy, more time if you like them a little firmer) until they open up.

  4. Step 4

    Spread out newspaper on table. Carefully empty oysters onto newspaper. Enjoy with lemon juice or cocktail sauce.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy your oysters in months that have an "R" in them.
  • Always wear gloves when shucking oysters.
