Pine cones are a beautiful addition to Fall and holiday decor as well as outdoor weddings. Making pine cone place card holders is one way to incorporate a bit of nature into your home. There are many ways to make them; so I will give ideas for a wedding or anniversary party design and a Christmas design. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • plenty of pine cones as close to same size as possible
  • crafting metallic aerosol paint
  • hot glue gun and glue stick
  • business card stock paper (wedding design)
  • laser or desk jet printer
  • Christmas gift tags (Holiday design)
  • Small wood craft letter (wedding design, use letter of couple's last name)
  • Pack of disposable cardboard coasters (Holiday design)
  • other craft implements of your choosing
  1. Step 1

For both designs begin with the following steps. Make sure you have enough pine cone, and have a couple of spares just in case you need them. Pine cones should be as close to the same size as possible; however, you can use smaller ones for children's place settings. Wash pine cones gently and allow to fully dry at least overnight.

  2. Step 2

Wedding or Anniversary Party Design--Using either gold or silver metallic aerosol paint, coat pine cones evenly and lightly. Too much paint is unattractive, so spray carefully. You can always go back over it with a light coat after it dries if you feel it is needed. Allow to completely dry. Use your glue gun to attach the bottom or side of the pine cone (you decide which design you like best) to the wood letter. Play around with placement of the pinecone on the lettering to find what you like. Remember, each one can be different if you like! Print names onto business card stock paper in the color and design font you prefer. You can put the business cards directly into the pine cone by using a very line of hot glue along the bottom, or you can hole punch the business cards, use small strands of light weight yarn such as Sugar 'n Cream through the hole to create a hanging place card. Play around with the design!

  3. Step 3

Christmas Design--Using gold, silver, or red metallic aerosol paint, carefully coat pine cones as instructed above. You can use different colors for a festive blend. Using glue gun, attach pine cones to holiday coasters at the bottom of the pine cone. Allow to fully dry. Print names onto holiday gift tags and hang from the top of the pine cone.

  4. Step 4

Embellish your place cards with different crafting ideas. If you prefer the pine cones retain their natural look, you can omit the metallic paint. You could also use chipboard hang tags, which can be found at most of the larger craft stores. Most importantly, have fun as you play with your crafting ideas!

Tips & Warnings
  • As an alternative, tip the ends of the pine cones in clear crafting glue and shake them in a bag of colorful glitter. Be sure to shake off excess glitter thoroughly.
  • Use holiday print material to cover the coasters if you cannot find them in a holiday design. Tartan is especially pretty with the pine cones. Just hot glue the material to the back of the coasters, being careful not to let the material bunch up so that the coaster can lay flat.
  • Always use extreme caution when using a hot glue gun. They can result in serious burns!
  • Keep all paints and crafting supplies away from pets and small children
