While we try to incorporate healthy eating habits in our day-to-day lives, Thanksgiving is generally a time when calorie counting goes out the window. However, with just a few simple steps, eating during the holidays can be delicious and nutritious. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Olive Oil
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Water
  • Spices
  1. Step 1

If you are worried about snacks and appetizers at holiday parties, stick to filling up on raw fruits and veggies.

  2. Step 2

Drink lots of water. It will not only fill you up, but will keep you hydrated during this stressful holiday season.

  3. Step 3

Replace mayonnaise or other dips with low-fat sour cream and onion or garlic flavoring. To get the most bang for your nutritional buck, use fresh garlic, onion or dill in dips.

  4. Step 4

You can replace butter in most recipes with olive oil. Still rich in flavor, but without as much saturated fat, cholesterol and salt.

  5. Step 5

Be creative with spices. Limit salt by using new and exotic flavorings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many holiday dishes are already packed with nutrients. They're just hidden under butter, oil, salt and other unhealthy ingredients. If you load up on healthier sides (yam or sweet potatoes, vegetable medleys, salads, fresh cranberries), you can indulge in your favorite calorie-laden foods with less guilt.
