Fit All Your Winter Coats in Your Closet

Because closets can be small while coats can be quite large, getting every inch of space out of your closet is important. One of the bulkiest things to store are your winter coats--especially if you have more than a few! Store them easily with these tips, while still keeping them accessible.

From Quick Guide: Winter Clothes Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean out your closet once the weather gets cool.

  2. Step 2

Make toss, donate, sell and store piles for summer clothes that won't have any use for months and clothes (both winter and summer, warm- and cold-weather) that you don't wear or like anymore.

  3. Step 3

Store any undershirts, tank tops, club tops or strappy tops on hangers. You can fit approximately 15 tops on one hanger simply by hooking the shirts' straps around the neck of the hanger. Note: even though these tops are not hanging completely flat they will typically not wrinkle.

  4. Step 4

Sort your winter coats by type: warm-weather nights, windbreakers, formal coats, lounging around the house, or business coats.

  5. Step 5

Assign a hanger or two to your various coat piles and hang your coats on top of one another. Start with either the largest coat or coat you're less likely to wear often and work your way down.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sturdy plastic and wooden hangers usually work best for large, heavy coats.
  • If the hanger feels like it's going to give divide the stack amongst two hangers.
  • Avoid dry-cleaner hangers (the ones that have wiring at the top and are attached at the bottom through a cardboard roll) as the cardboard roll bends very easily.
