How to Promote Your Music Online

How to Promote Your Music Online thumbnail
Use social networks to promote your music online.

The internet provides a variety of tools for independent musicians. Social networks reach out to millions of users daily. These sites allow musicians to post their music or share links with music fans who may want to listen to the music. Musicians can share links to blogs, websites and even new photos from gigs and promo shoots. With social networking sites, musicians can also directly contact fans and interact with them.

Instructions

    • 1

Upload your videos to YouTube. Use videos from live performances, music videos you made or lyric videos that go along with your music. Use the "share" buttons to post links to your Twitter and Facebook account. Encourage others to do the same.

    • 2

Create a "fan page" on facebook for your music. Invite all your friends and ask them to invite their friends as well. Use this page to upload videos and link to your website and sites where fans can sample music. Update the page often to let your fans know what you are up to. Be personal instead of sounding purely like a marketing firm. Fans will interact if they believe it's a person, not a label, running your fan page.

    • 3

Create a MySpace page. Upload your music and videos directly to your profile. Fans can listen to your music and add you as a friend. When you update your profile, such as by adding new music or a new blog entry, it will appear in their news feeds. You can link your Twitter and facebook accounts to MySpace as well.

    • 4

Create a central website where fans can access all of your social networking links, videos and music files. Use a URL that is easy to remember and short enough to send people over such services as Twitter. A short URL is easier to print on promotional material as well. Update the website often so fans know what the band or artist is up. Sites that aren't current or updated will get lost in the world wide web.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take the time to inform people about your music. Send links to people who like artists with a sound and style similar to yours, or send messages to fellow music fans.
