How to Prepare for Blackouts

Who knows when a storm or accident can cause a blackout, and any number of problems can occur when you're without electricity. Here are a few ideas on how to ensure you're as safe as possible when the lights go out.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Keep flashlights handy around the house. Candles create a fire hazard and probably aren’t the best idea for lighting.
Step2
Have a portable radio with fresh batteries, to hear weather and government announcements.
Step3
Have at least three days worth of water — about a gallon a day is best.
Step4
Store dry foods like nuts, candy bars and cereal that don’t require refrigeration.
Step5
Make sure prescriptions for medications are filled.
