How to Create a Mural in Your Classroom

I have been creating thematic murals in my classroom since 1996. You do not have to be a fantastic artist to create a really cute mural. I am blessed with a large blank wall in the middle of my classroom so about 12 times a year we create a large thematic mural. You can just as easily do an outside mural.

Things You'll Need

• a blank wall
• some (tempera) paint

1. I have a nice large space for murals

   Find a large space to paint and lay down a tarp or something because the kids will spill and drip paint under the mural.

2. I outline the mural in crayon

   Draw the outline of the mural. You will probably want to outline the mural for them.

3. 

   Assign each child a space to paint. I usually tell them "you paint this dinosaur or this area". I have the kids hold a small cup of paint while they are painting.

4. 

   Have the kids paint in groups of 4 or 5. I have the kids stand on chairs for the higher parts of the mural.

5. 

   Do the hard or really high parts yourself.

6. 

   Take pictures of the process and the finished product, it's great for the kids to see the process in action.
