Chocolate sandwich cookies are addictive little things--the chocolate crunchy outside and the sweet creamy filling. But what if you don't want all of those preservatives? Or maybe you just like doing things the hard way. Either way, you might like to try this recipe for homemade "oreo" cookies. Read on to learn how to make them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 cup powdered (confectioner's) sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp. whipping cream
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • Electric mixer

How to Make the Chocolate Cookie Outside

  1. Step 1

Cream together the butter and shortening using an electric mixer. Beat in the sugar a little at a time, then stir in the egg. The mixture should be smooth and yellow.

  2. Step 2

Sift the flour and the cocoa together. Add this mixture into the creamed mix, blending until well combined.

  3. Step 3

Shape the dough into 2 or 3 large rolls, each about 1 inch in diameter. Wrap the rolls in waxed paper and refrigerate them for a few hours or overnight.

  4. Step 4

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Remove the dough from the refrigerator, unwrap, and cut in slices 1/8 inch thick.

  5. Step 5

Place slices on baking sheet at least 1 inch apart and bake 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool completely before adding the filling.

  6. How to Make the Creamy Filling

  7. Step 1

Cream sugar with butter in electric mixer. Add cream and vanilla, beating until smooth.

  8. Step 2

Use about a tablespoon of filling for each sandwich cookie. Spread filling on half of the chocolate cookies and use the other half to make the tops of the "sandwiches."

Tips & Warnings
  • These cookies should keep for up to 2 weeks
  • The cookies may also be frozen, and should last for 6 months in the freezer
