Putting on a magic show to amuse and amaze your friends is a lot of fun-and easier than you'd think! Here is a trick that does not require too much practice and involves very simple props but looks very mysterious and impressive. With three accomplices and a few common household objects you can make someone appear to float in the air! Read on to learn how.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Three friends to serve as your accomplices
  • A low bench
  • A sheet
  • Two long sticks
  • A pair of shoes
  • An audience
  1. Step 1

Find three friend willing to serve as your accomplices. They can help you to get the props ready as well as helping you to practice for the trick.

  2. Step 2

Fasten the shoes to the end of the sticks. Place the sticks on the bench with the shoes at the end. Drape a sheet over the bench that covers the sticks and shoes completely.

  3. Step 3

Designate one of your accomplices, the one who is to do the "floating," to sit in the audience. Have the other two stand by to serve as your assistants.

  4. Step 4

Call your friend out of the audience (or pretend to do so if this is a practice run) and say that you are going to make her float in midair. Have her stand behind the bench.

  5. Step 5

As your other two helpers to hold the sheet up in front of the bench. They must take care that the sticks with shoes on the ends are blocked from the audience by the sheet at all times.

  6. Step 6

Have your friend lie down on the bench, putting her own feet on the floor. Have the helpers cover her with the sheet.

  7. Step 7

Say some "magic words" - "hocus pocus" or "expelliarmus" or "Kalamazoo" or anything else you can think of. Then say "I now command you to rise!"

  8. Step 8

Instruct your friend (the one lying on the bench) to grab both sticks with her hands. Then have her stand up slowly, holding the two sticks out in front of her so it looks like the sticks are her legs.

  9. Step 9

Whip the sheet off if you'd like to reveal all and end your magic show by giving your audience a big laugh. If you mess this trick up, you'll still get a laugh, and you can keep practicing until you do get it right.

Tips & Warnings
  • Glue is probably your best best for fastening the shoes to the sticks but if you want to use the shoes again you may experiment with tying or taping them
  • Practice this trick a number of times so your helpers can tell you if it looks realistic
  • Have the designated "floater" wear shoes very similar to the ones on the sticks
  • Make sure that the fastening method you use to get the shoes to stay on the sticks does not show when only the shoe tops are visible
  • Be careful that the shoes do not fall off the sticks
