Having Fibromyalgia is difficult enough without having to face the rigor of the holidays without fear of a flare-up. Just thinking about the parties, shopping or visiting with family and friends can be exhausting, much less attending or doing them. Before the next occasion ignites that fear of a flare-up try these tips which may help survive those times and make them happy memories instead of depression caused by being a no-show or worse---attending and suffering the next day.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • love for yourself
  • caring for yourself
  • eternal hope that tomorrow will be better

Step1
CELEBRATE your healthy days. REJOICE in the good times, even if the bad ones outweigh and outlast the good ones. Don't let your condition define you. Be who you were before the Fibromyalgia became a part of your life.
Step2
MAKE PEACE! Mend issues you may have with family and friends. Remember that stress and agitation are worse for your condition. It takes a little bit of work, but it will help you in the end to be peaceful and happy.
Step3
TREAT YOUSELF WITH COMPASSION. Remember that if it was a family member such as your mother or child, you would treat them with great compassion and caring. So what makes you any different? Don't beat yourself up because you can't go somewhere or do something.
Step4
DANCE (or sway) to music. It is very uplifting. Just because you managed to drag yourself to a party, doesn't mean you have to dance the night away. Sway and move your arms. Be happy just to be where you are and enjoy the conversation of good friends!
Step5
BE ENTHUSIASTIC about your limitations. Okay, so you can't run from store to store! Make a list of what you would like to buy and ask the person you went shopping with to pick up those items for you when you get tired and that persistent pain starts up. Sit in a restaurant or cafeteria that is decorated for the holiday and listen to the music and chatter of those around. Think to yourself that this is okay while you are resting.
Step6
CATALOG SHOP from the comfort of your couch. Remember that persons without Fibromyalgia catalog shop simply for the pleasure of not being pushed and shoved in the holiday crowds and they don't suffer a minute part of the pain you feel when pushed and shoved!
Step7
BE HAPPY. Eat and drink, but in moderation. Remember that the foods you eat or the drinks you consume have a great bearing on your fibromyalgia. Knowing that your condition will force you to leave early, keep smiling and consider that at least you made it to the function. If you didn't make it to the function, think of the fun you will have calling your friends and family and getting the low-down and up-dates!

Tips & Warnings

  • Always remember to treat yourself as you would treat others with your condition.
  • Don't feel guilty about saying "no" to some of the invitations. Choose the ones you would really like to attend and apologize to the others with a request to call you afterward and tell you all about it.
  • Don't be afraid to show your friends and family the new you. They may be more understanding than you give them credit for.
