Step 1
Choosing how many bottles of wine you want to check in is limited by Transportation Security Administration (TSA). It limits checked in wines to 5 liters which translates to no more than 6 bottles of wine. Carriers come in 2, 4 or 6 bottle sizes. These options should provide enough choice for any trip.
-
Step 2
Look for a closed cell foam interior to protect your wine. This type of construction provides more durability than Styrofoam. Closed cell foam also guards against shock, impact and vibration. It also affords long term protection and maintains the temperature from 6 to 8 hours; more than enough for most trips.

Step 3
Find a durable outer shell made of aluminum, leather or heavy duty polyethylene. When empty, the carrier’ s weight can range anywhere from 7lb. to 20lb. And the largest carrier is no bigger than airline carry-on luggage.
-
Step 4
Selecting a wine carrier for comfort is also important. 4 and 6 bottle carriers with wheels make traveling through airports easy. Some carriers also come with shoulder straps. Search for telescoping and hidden handles.
-
Step 5
You may also want to find a carrier whose interior is dark which adds additional protection against light exposure. Wines can also be assured of staying chilled by placing ice packs within the interior.
