TD Ameritrade is an equity brokerage that specializes in online trading of stocks, bonds and other financial instruments. Clients of TD Ameritrade must fund their accounts before they begin trading. Account funds can remain with TD Ameritrade or clients can remove funds at their convenience through a variety of withdrawal mechanisms, such as an electronic transfer. TD Ameritrade customers can also set up a checking account and write checks directly from their account funds.

      Visit the homepage of TD Ameritrade and click "Open an Account" to register as a client. You will need to provide your name, address and contact information along with details such as your Social Security number and bank account information.

      Deposit funds into your TD Ameritrade account. You can send a check or money order to the company or transfer money directly from a bank account or another financial account.

      Log in to your account and click the "Accounts" tab, then "Cash Management" and "Checks/Debit Card."

      Complete the application for a TD Ameritrade checking account. Your checks will arrive in the mail in about two weeks.
