Every year you should consult a professional to help you update your makeup palette. Blue eye shadow and hot pink lipstick was in style twenty years ago--and even shades you thought were hip, such as mauve or smokey eyes, are also a trend of the past. Follow these steps to make your facial features stand out--in a trendy way.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Time
  • Appointment with a professional
  • Transportation to the location

    Eyes, cheeks, lips

  1. Step 1

Make an appointment with a professional. Sephora is a great option. Otherwise, a department store is fine. The counters of MAC, Bobbi Brown, Chanel and Nars typically have makeup artists that can help you.

  2. Step 2

Show up with an idea of what you like such as creating full, thick eyelashes or soft, glossy lips. Cut out pictures from magazines to show the artist what you envision. Have the artist apply makeup to ONE side of your face.

  3. Step 3

Now it is your turn. Try applying makeup to the other side of your face, consulting the artist as to how he/she used the brush or applicator. Apply slowly, mirroring the artist's technique.

  4. Step 4

If after the first try of colors you are unhappy, have the artist work with you until you are satisfied. Mix and blend colors and shades. This is your time to explore.

  5. Step 5

After you see your face the way you want it, purchase the makeup of choice. And toss out your old, outdated makeup.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have an idea of what you want to look like.
  • Choose a brand of makeup that is trustworthy.
  • Know what colors you look best in/colors you usually wear.
  • If the makeup artist isn't performing to your expectations or is not understanding your needs, go to someone else.
  • Have a budget before you go to the makeup counter. That way, you will not overspend.
