One of the most important things that you can do for your twin children is to help give them some independence. While it is good for them to draw on each other for support, they should not be dependent on that support. As the parent, there are some things that you can do to help build that independence. Read on to learn what they are.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Independence should begin very early with your twins, and the first step towards them gaining this is for them to try things by themselves. As a parent of a twin, you are going to be inclined to do everything together. Resist this urge on occasion and make sure that you play with each twin alone some of the time.
Step2
Try to resist the urge to constantly dress your twins alike. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a favorite past time of many twins. The simple act of putting them in the same clothes constantly can leave them feeling incomplete without one another. This can become a problem with fostering a healthy independent child.
Step3
When you are enrolling them in school, put them in different classes. Allowing them to stretch their wings individually will do wonders for building their self esteem. You want them to be able to function well in all situations, and this is a great chance to give them some skills.
Step4
When it is possible, be sure to celebrate each child's accomplishments independently of one another. Twins often reach milestones around the same time, and they should be celebrated with equal excitement. Often, the twin that does something second gets the short end of the stick. Be very mindful of this as they grow and learn.
Step5
Remind your twins every day of why they are special. Every child, including twins, have qualities that make them unique. Celebrate these differences every chance that you get. Your twins will grow to be happy, independent, well adjusted children in their own right. Remember that since they are so much alike, you should truly highlight those things that make them unique!
