Creating a science fiction masterpiece requires deep thought and the ability to stretch one's imagination beyond the here and now. Here are some steps to follow to gain inspiration for your next story.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A TV or VCR
  • A collection of good science fiction books
  • A PC with an Internet connection
  • A large scratch pad
  1. Step 1

Go outside on a starry night and imagine what would happen if a spaceship landed in your backyard. Picture what the aliens would look like, and how they would act. How would you react? Write down your impressions on your scratch pad.

  2. Step 2

Watch some of the great science fiction classics, such as HG Wells "The Time Machine". Try to imagine how this great author created this work in his mind, and see if you can duplicate the process.

  3. Step 3

Surf through the technology sites to learn what is new and exciting. Take each advance through its logical progression to the future. What will be the impact on our civilization if this technological advance moves forward? What conflicts can it create? Write your thoughts on your scratch pad.

  4. Step 4

Read about current events, and try to visualize the conflicts between nations escalating to conflicts between worlds. What types of conflicts could arise between Earth and an alien world? What types of natural resources would an alien nation require? Write down your thoughts on your scratch pad.

  5. Step 5

Reread passages from your favorite science fiction stories. What conflicts arose, and how were they presented? What is the point of origination of each conflict? How would the conflict change if the point of origination changed? Write down your ideas.

  6. Step 6

Review the ideas you have written on your scratch pad, and see if several of them can be combined or expanded upon.

Tips & Warnings
  • Music, exercise, and discussions with friends can also help the idea generation process.
  • Don't let others cause you to drop an idea through criticism. Remember, most of the world's great authors were heavily criticized!
