How to make the most of a Doctor's Appointment

Whether it's your own healthcare provider or a new consultant, some preparation will make an appointment easier and productive for both you and the healthcare provider.

Things You'll Need:

  • computer
  • paper and pencil
  • insurance card
  1. Step 1

    1. Dress comfotably and simply. The more layers and jewelry you wear,
    the longer you waste time removing your clothes for the exam.
    Sometimes, it is not even necessary to remove all clothing.*

  2. Step 2

    2. Locate your medical insurance information.
    The office will want to make a copy.

  3. Step 3

    3. Gather all home prescriptions bottles
    OR make a list on paper or on the computer of all current
    prescriptions.
    Be sure to include the dose, example, the mgm (milligrams)and the
    frequency you take the medications.

  4. Step 4

    4. Write down any questions you have It is easy to forget once the
    care provider enters the room.

  5. Step 5

    5. Invite a close trusted friend or family member to go with you to
    the appointment especially if you have hearing difficulties or
    concerned about understanding the care provider.

Tips & Warnings
  • It will easier to update the home medication list if the list is entered on the computer.
  • Don't forget to get the insurance card back from the receptionist.
  • Be honest and upfront with your care provider. Remember only you knows how you feel.
