You've researched and planned and made the decision to home school your kids. Just one thing stands in your way: convincing the well-meaning relatives that you're doing the right thing. Here are a few steps to tell your family that you plan to home school.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Patience

Step1
Tell the family member that you will be home schooling Junior. Be factual, but compassionate in your tone, especially if you think they will be hostile to the news.
Step2
Listen to all of the questions and concerns with an open mind. Avoid appearing defensive.
Step3
Respond with empathy. "I completely understand your concerns. I had the same thoughts when I first considered this option."
Step4
If the family members are open to hearing the details of your home schooling plans, go ahead and share as much as you are comfortable.

However, if they want to argue the validity of home schooling as an option, don't go there. The more you try to convince them that home schooling is a reasonable and effective educational choice, the more they will try to convince you it isn't. Thank them for their concern and then change the subject.
Step5
Be aware that they may never fully embrace your decision. That's okay. On the other hand, once they see how well Junior is thriving, they may become your greatest allies and support system.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most relatives really do have Junior's best interest at heart. Give them the benefit of the doubt, even when they are challenging your parenting choices.
