Board games aren't just for kids. Leave Candyland and Monopoly behind, and learn how to play Puerto Rico, the award-winning strategy game.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Puerto Rico Board Game
  • At least two other players
  1. Step 1

Place the buildings on the building card where marked, place the money in the lower portion of the card, shuffle the plantations face-down, place colonists on the ship, and distribute starting money and plantations as directed by the rulebook.

  2. Step 2

On your turn, select a role. Each role has a special privilege for you, in addition to an action that everyone will take. Choose Builder to buy buildings for infrastructure, Mayor to put people on those buildings, Craftsman to produce barrels, Captain to exchange barrels for victory, Prospector and Trader to acquire more money.

  3. Step 3

A good basic strategy is to build a production building to help create barrels, and a purple building to give you an infrastructure benefit. Remember that buildings need people to work, so get people in your buildings and start earning money to build more buildings. The start of the game is often slow, so anyone who can start fast will have an advantage.

  4. Step 4

The game will end when someone has all twelve building spaces filled, or whenever the people or victory points run out. Remember that whoever has the most victory points at the end of the game wins, so don't focus entirely on money while forgetting about points.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to figure out what other role players might choose. If you can guess, you can plan ahead.
  • Due to the many pieces and rules, the first time you play Puerto Rico may take a while. However, the game itself is easy to play.
