Step1
Unlike typical cocktail parties, Oscar weekend parties have rules of behavior that are unconventional as far as manners go. To not know them or even worse to ignore them is to invite criticism. The first rule of thumb and as far as that goes, a general rule to follow when entering the unofficial boundaries of Hollywood, is to not take anything personally. No matter what you may hear in passing about yourself or your date, do not stop and look at the person and say, "Talk to the hand."
Step2
As someone's date, do not expect to be introduced. Whether you can forgive your date for this later on is entirely up to you. The fact is, no one cares about spouses, relatives or dates at Hollywood parties. Do not go out and spend thousands of dollars on a new hairstyle and clothes as no one will be impressed, because they won't see you.
Step3
Dress sophisticated. Do not wear your new halter top that show off your new breasts and for men, do not wear your new sandals or Superman tie. And when the sun goes down...everyone, take off your sunglasses.
Step4
Do not ask your date if you can bring your mom, brother or best friend. You do not get to bring an entourage. They are going to have to take your word for it that you saw Mary Kate and Ashley share a cracker.
Step5
There are lots of food and drink but don't over do. Have a drink, then sparkling water, maybe an appetizer. Do like the celebrities do and wait till after the after after parties to stop and get fast food.
Step6
You have your script in your nightstand at home and you think it's destiny and you must bring it with you, but don't. There is an unwritten no pitching rule. Pitch your script like everyone else in Hollywood does, to the people in the mail room.
Step7
Don't expect to meet your host. Ever! At Hollywood parties your host comes to you, not the other way around and the chance of this happening is nil, even for your date, unless they are Hugh Hefner.
Step8
Don't talk to celebrities. The last think anyone wants to hear you say to someone like Snoop Dog, is "What's up, Bro?"
Step9
Do not take pictures, do not ask your date to take a picture, and certainly don't ask a stranger to take a picture of you with a celebrity. Posing while faking a toast with Clint Eastwood may win you respect back home, but not at this party. Celebrities, more than anyone else hate phonies.
