Whether you bought your cast-iron cookware brand new from a store or you inherited the cookware from a family member, seasoning the iron will prevent it from rusting.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mild dish-washing detergent
  • Vegetable shortening
  • Oven
  1. Step 1

Clean your new cast-iron pan with a dishcloth and a mild dish-washing detergent. Dry completely immediately after rinsing.

  2. Step 2

Grease the inside and outside of the pan with vegetable shortening. Wipe off excess shortening with a paper towel.

  3. Step 3

Put the lidless cookware in the oven and bake (season) at 250 degrees F overnight (about 10 hours). If the pan has an iron lid, season it in the oven beside (not on) the pan.

  4. Step 4

Allow the pan to cool naturally.
