Moving is hard enough, so make it easy on yourself and use the internet to get as much of the move planned out online. The following steps will give you some ideas on how to ease the pain of moving by using the internet.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Decide whether you're going to move yourself or if you're going to hire a moving company. You can get quotes online for both self-move trucks and hired moving companies.
Step2
If you're doing the move yourself, check out the moving company websites for deals on packing boxes. Some will even give you free shipping if you purchase a minimum amount.
Step3
Use the internet to transfer your utilities. Almost all utilities nowadays can be transferred online so look at this option first before spending your time on hold waiting for a customer service rep.
Step4
If your friends are going to be helping you move, give them a hand and send them an email to bring them up to speed on moving day details. Use an online mapping program and email them a map showing your old and new location. Don't forget to include your cell number! Your phone will be disconnected during the move and your friends may need a way to get in touch with you.
Step5
Arrange for your mail to be permanently forwarded to your new address. You can change your mailing address online with the U.S. Postal Service for very little cost. Fill out the online form and any mail sent to your previous address with be forwarded to your new address. This way you don't have to worry if you forgot to notify someone of your address change. Your mail will still come to you and you can update the information at that time.
Step6
Send out a mass email to your friends and family letting them know you've moved and provide them with your new contact information. If you're planning a housewarming, you can provide this information with the invitation.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you use USPS to change your address online, sign up for their exclusive movers coupons for great deals in your new area.
