Step 1
Make sure you are familiar with the manufacturer. A name brand is likely to have a good warranty, while an off brand may not have any real warranty at all.

Make certain that the features on the camera are things you would need or use on a regular basis. Things like a zoom function or auto focus may come in handy, but three or four flash settings may not be so helpful.

Make sure to get a camera with enough megapixels to make a good photograph when the pictures are transfered to the computer

Finally make certain that the camera itself is sturdy enough for constant use. Digital cameras may be fragile, but to fragile may mean the difference in taking pictures or constantly returning the camera for repairs.
