There are many different designs available when it comes to scrapbook paper. Patterned paper is often used for background designs on scrapbooking layouts. You can also create your own unique background for your scrapbook pages by using different materials that will generate “texture” on your paper. Scrapbooking is all about creativity, here are some ideas to help you craft a one-of-a-kind background for your scrapbook layout.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cardstock (page base)
  • Ink pads or re-inkers (desired colors)
  • Water color pencils
  • Small paint brush
  • Foam (the kind used for packing and wrapping items)
  • Bubble wrap
  • Aluminum foil
  • Tissue paper
  1. Step 1

    Foam Texture

First, fold your foam sheet in half and press it on to your ink pad until the color is visible on the foam. Then, press the foam onto your cardstock in a rolling motion. Roll from one side to the other starting with your index finger and rolling across to your pinky. Repeat this motion all over your page until you get the desired pattern. You can also mix colors for a more dramatic effect.

  2. Step 2

    Bubble Wrap Texture

Tear off a piece of bubble wrap (preferably the small bubbles) and press it onto your ink pad rubbing it in the ink to cove the plastic bubbles. Then, twist the bubble wrap into your cardstock in a circular motion. Continue to ink the bubble wrap and repeat the first step until your have covered your background space.

  3. Step 3

    Aluminum Foil Texture

Squish a medium sized piece of aluminum foil and hold it at one end leaving the other end free to dunk into the ink. Cover the foil with ink and pounce it onto your paper. The crease in the aluminum foil will make unique designs on the paper. Continue to press the foil on the paper until your get the design you want.

  4. Step 4

    Tissue Paper Texture

Purchase acid-free tissue paper for your scrapbook page background. Lay your tissue paper flat or punch out shapes with a craft punch, then use water color pencils and a wet paint brush to paint your paper the desired color. Allow the tissue paper to dry completely. With your colored tissue paper you can glue the paper flat, arrange the shapes on the cardstock or for a more dramatic appearance crumple the paper to add dimension to your page background.

Tips & Warnings
  • Create unique backgrounds by mixing and coordinating colors on your cardstock base.
  • Always allow inks and paints to dry completely before attaching them to your pages.
  • Never put photos on a damp paper or they may get damaged.
  • Keep little pieces of foam, bubble wrap, sponges, etc. in your scrapbook supplies so you have some on hand when you are feeling creative.
