Things You'll Need:

  • A little bit of time
  • Some patience
  • Some love
  1. Step 1

Welcome to owning a dog! I own a Parson Russell terrier, which are related to Jack Russells. So you can see that my dog is extremely hyper. And that would be fine and dandy, except I live in an apartment. Even worse, I work full time, so my dog is alone for at least 8 hours, 5 days a week.

  2. Step 2

So how do I keep my male Parson Russell terrier (Blackjack) from tearing up my apartment? Easy--I exercise him and keep him occupied. My dog has plenty of toys (stimulation), and he goes on at least three walks a day. His walks are also his bathroom breaks.

  3. Step 3

I started running with him when he was 1. Three days a week I run 2 km with my dog. In the beginning, he was out of shape just like me, so we started together. First we walked the route, then we ran, walked a little, ran, walked a little, until we could run the whole way. When I run with him, I still let him stop to pee and do number 2.

  4. Step 4

Having a dog is a great motivator. On the mornings when I don't want to jog with him, I just look at his face, and I do it. I do it because it keeps me in shape, and my dog loves it. Whenever we come back from a run and I am stretching, he licks me like crazy and wags his tail in happiness.

  5. Step 5

I'm not saying you have to run with your dog, but keep him occupied with toys and plenty of stimulation. Also take him for walks; it'll help get you both in shape.
