Butterscotch brownies are a variation of the classic "blondie," made with brown sugar and chunks of milk chocolate for a richer flavor. They're commonly found at many bake-offs and baking events in the South, but you don't have to venture far to enjoy this delicious treat. Here's how to whip up your own batch of butterscotch brownies.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 4 tbs. fresh butter
  • 2 cups light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 4 tbs. 1% milk
  • 1 lb. milk chocolate pieces
  • ½ cup pecans, chopped
  • ½ cup walnuts, chopped
  • 10-by-15 inch jelly roll pan

Step1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step2
Spray the jelly roll pan with baking spray, and set aside.
Step3
Prepare flour mixture. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Set aside.
Step4
Prepare batter. Mix the butter and sugar at medium speed until creamy.
Step5
Add eggs. Beat in the eggs one at a time until combined, then add vanilla.
Step6
Combine mixtures. Slowly add half the dry ingredients to the butter and egg mixture, then add the milk. Stir completely until smooth.
Step7
Add remaining flour and combine thoroughly.
Step8
Slowly fold in the chocolate and nuts, combining completely.
Step9
Prepare to bake. Pour the batter into the pan using a spatula, and spread out until even. Make sure chocolate chunks are studded evenly throughout the pan.
Step10
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until lightly brown. Batter should be cooked completely in the center of the pan.
Step11
Leave to cool at least 10 minutes before cutting.
Step12
Serve, and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings

  • Butterscotch brownies can be served warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
  • Try dark chocolate chunks for variation.
  • It's best to underbake these bars and let them set while cooling.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
  • Overbaking these bars will result in a crunchy and crispy brownie that is less flavorful.
