How to Avoid Fish Attacks in the Water!

Most sharks, barracuda and large fish prefer to avoid human contact. Attacks occur in self-defense or when a fish has mistaken a person for its natural prey. Try these tips to avoid being attacked, and follow this advice for what to do if an attack occurs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Do not wear shiny, dangling jewelry that might attract barracuda or other large fish. Fishing lures are made of shining material because this is what attracts them. Many small bait fish that are tasty tidbits for large fish reflect light in the water. This flash of silver is the same as a flash of jewelry.
Step2
Swim in groups, never alone! Fish are attracted to the splash of humans bathing, but a lot of splashing will scare them away!
Step3
A shark will usually bump you once before attacking. Sharks have very poor eyesight. If you attack back the shark will usually leave. Hit the shark with closed fist and yell loudly! A shark usually attacks due to mistaken identity of it's prey!
Step4
When a small fish bites the bacteria from the mouth pose the greatest danger. Wash the bite wound immediately and thoroughly with salt water. Then wash with soap and water promptly. See a doctor if the wound is more than superficial!
A big fish! Immediately remove the victim from water, and then stop the blood flow with a tourniquet if needed. Cover the victim to prevent shock! Call for help!

Tips & Warnings

  • Only swim where life guards are present!

on 5/1/2008 In Florida, sometimes boaters or jetski riders are injured by sturgeon (up to 200 lbs) or rays leaping in the water. Use caution when sturgeon are spawning in rivers such as the Suwannee.
