How to Host a Baby's Birthday

So your baby is turning one, two or three, and you want to have a party that will be fun for both the children and adults. Here are some ideas for keeping everyone safe and happy at your child's birthday bash.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cake and ice cream
  • A character costume
  • Food and drinks
  • A large room filled with toys
  • An instant camera and picture frames

Step1
Have an adult dress as your child's favorite character. Costumes are easily accessible at party stores. It is important to remember that the character can appear large and scary to the children, so the costume-wearer should always be seated and not speak very loudly.
Step2
Take photos of each child and the character with an instant camera and put them in frames as a goodie bag. This is a great way to preserve a memory of the party. You can even personalize each frame with the child's name before the big day.
Step3
Serve food that everyone can enjoy. Babies will probably eat baby food or formula, so get pizza or chicken fingers and French fries for the older kids. Many adults enjoy those foods too, but also provide cheese and appetizers for the adults.
Step4
Open the gifts. In most cases gifts should be opened at the birthday party, but for a baby ... no! The pieces will be lost, eaten or pocketed. You will have no idea who gave you what. Be gracious when accepting a gift, put it in another room and open it later. Have a pen and paper with you to track who gave what so you can send a thank you note later.
Step5
Clear the furniture and dangerous items from one large room and line the sides with folding chairs. Also, fill the room with toys. This gives the children a place to interact and some spots for parents to sit and supervise. Babies and toddlers are too young for organized games and can have a great time just playing with each other in an area where they can have some room to hang out.
Step6
Set up a room for people who do not have children (or do not care to sit with them). You'll find that everyone does not need to be in the same space and a sanctuary for adults will be greatly appreciated.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have cameras on hand as there will be plenty of cute moments.
  • Put away the Monet and the sculptures, as this is a baby birthday party and if you have too many fragile items it will not be fun for the little ones. If you're not comfortable having it in your house then rent out a space.
  • Have food that everyone can enjoy. If there are any babies with allergies, skip those foods. There will be too much going on for you to monitor that safely.
  • If you have a dog or cat in your home, this may be a good time to take the pet elsewhere. Pets can scare babies and children who are not used to them. Or, worst case scenario, the pet could bite or a child could feed it something toxic.
