When you move to a new state or town, it is essential to change your voter registration so that you can vote in local elections. This can be done in a variety of ways, all of which are generally easy, quick and painless.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Perhaps the easiest way to change your registration is by using a mail-in application. These are generally available at your local post office, state liquor stores and public libraries. Once you fill them out you can drop them off at your local voter registration office, or mail them in.
Step2
You can also change your registration in person at your local voter registration office.
Step3
A third way is to apply on-line. This will allow you to download and fill out an application using your computer, but you will still have to mail it in to your state election office or hand deliver it to your voter registration office.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although each state has different voting regulations, in general you must be registered to vote at least three weeks before the election.
  • Registering is not the same the voting, although you can do both simultaneously if you choose to register in person.
  • Each state has different restrictions on who can register to vote. Check your state's home page to see if you are eligible. In general you must be over 18, a U.S. citizen and not a convicted felon.
