How to Create a Watercolor Mosaic

How to Create a Watercolor Mosaic thumbnail
Watercolor mosaics can be a fun art project for kids.

A watercolor mosaic is similar to a collage, except that the artist creates the images that stick onto the collage. If you have specific images you wish to create, then you first render onto some watercolor paper before cutting and gluing. Otherwise, you can just start to paint and let the images come to you as you work.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your painting station with water, watercolor pigments and brushes. Use the standard colors or mix your own. Begin painting on the watercolor paper. Experienced painters can create images on the paper, whereas beginners can start with simple geometric shapes. Or you can try creating one large painting on the sheet of watercolor paper, and then cutting it up to create the mosaic. As the paint in drying, add some salt or other textures if you wish.

    • 2

Apply a thin layer of rubber cement to the back of your watercolor painting(s) and let it dry. Apply a layer of glue to your mosaic surface, such as a blank canvas or a block of cardboard.

    • 3

Begin cutting up your watercolor painting. Create the images that will be used in your mosaic, whether they are simple colored shapes or more complex images. Arrange them as you wish on a secondary surface such as a table -- this is the trial run for your mosaic, to find the right arrangement before gluing the pieces together.

    • 4

Begin gluing your pieces of watercolor paper onto the mosaic surface. Work slowly, one at a time.

    • 5

Examine your finished artwork and make any final details or corrections.
