Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Decide what the blinds will be. For these instructions, let's take it that you're playing a cash game rather than a tournament. This means the blinds will stay the same throughout the duration of the game.

  2. Step 2

Set monetary designations for chips. Take players' money and exchange for chips.

  3. Step 3

Deal one card face up to each player. Whoever has the highest card will begin as the dealer.

  4. Step 4

The player to the direct left of the dealer is the small blind and the player to the left of the small blind is the big blind. Both players must post their blinds.

  5. Step 5

Betting begins with the player to the left of the big blind. Unlike limit poker, this player can bet any amount greater than or equal to the big blind.

  6. Step 6

Go around the table to allow all players to post their bets.

  7. Step 7

Once all players have either folded or called the highest bet, lay down the flop.

  8. Step 8

Betting begins now with the player to the left of the dealer. Once again all bets, including raises, must be greater than or equal to the big blind.

  9. Step 9

Once the pot is good, meaning all bets have been placed, lay down the turn card.

  10. Step 10

Once again another round of betting ensues. Once the pot is good, lay down the river card.

  11. Step 11

The last round of betting takes place.

  12. Step 12

Once everyone has either folded or called, players still in the hand turn over their cards. Whoever can make the best five-card hand using their pocket cards and three cards on the table wins the pot.

  13. Step 13

The dealer button moves to the left as do the blinds, and the next hand begins.

  14. Step 14

Because this is a cash game, players can come and go as they please. The game is over when the players decide the game is over.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use an object to mark whom the dealer is for each hand.
  • If you're playing at home, use two decks of cards. This way one can be shuffled while the other one is in play, which will speed up the game.
  • If there is a minimum and maximum buy-in, always buy-in for the maximum if possible.
  • Poker is a form of gambling, so winning money isn't guaranteed.
  • If you're playing a home game, research the laws in your jurisdiction to make sure home gambling is legal.
