How to Write Your Own Sunday School Lessons

In teaching Sunday School for five years, I've found that the available curriculum doesn't always meet my needs or the needs of my students, so I used my degree in English-journalism and years of writing experience and began outlining my own lessons to better fit my class's needs. Through the guidelines below, you too can prepare lessons that better suit your unique classroom settings.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Pray for guidance. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to the lessons that will best meet the needs of your students. Ask your students what they are interested in learning.
Step2
Decide which scripture you’ll teach and look for a theme, like “love” or “trust” or “patience.”
Step3
Choose a verse from the scripture and make it the memory verse. Have the students learn the verse and repeat it each week.
Step4
Plan a craft to match the lesson’s theme. Prepare all the craft materials before class.
Step5
Write down your thoughts about the scripture. This will be the basis of the lesson.
Step6
Plan a game to match the lesson’s theme. Make sure the games are age-appropriate.
Step7
Write it all down and make each activity fit within your time limits.

Tips & Warnings

  • A lot of existing Web sites provide craft ideas for Sunday School. Type "free Sunday School crafts" in your search engine and review all the available information.
  • Don't be discouraged if you think the children aren't paying attention or learning about God. They are taking in more than you can imagine, but the thing they'll be paying the most attention to is your example.
